Bible – Book of Acts 9: 1 – 16 ; Verse 6
Introduction :
In the history of the choseN people of God from the Old Testament to the New Testament of the Lord Jesus, we know that God has called many different kinds of people and He always put a statement or a question to them. To Apraham, He said “ You have to leave your homeland …” ( Genesis 12:1). To Moses, , He said “ Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh…( Exodus 3:10 ). To Isaih, He asked : Whom will I send ? ( Is 6:8 ). But to Paul, in the Book of Acts, chapter 9, verse 6 , the New King James Version, I am excited of this verse “ Lord, what will you want me to do?”
The Holy Spirit reveals for the message this Sunday. Haleluja!
The qustion “ Lord, what will you want me to do?” not only expressed the sentiments of Paul at the moment, but it is a description of his continuing attitude throughout the balance of his life. Paul’s question is appropriate for each of us under all circumtances and all times.
I. The question “ Lord, what will you want me to do?” caknowledges the absolute lordship of Jesus Christ.
During the days of Paul, the term “ Lord “ for a man to be Lord meant many things. It was a title of authority that distinguished between a Master and a slave . Lord was also used to describe abosolute possession or lordship. It could refer to ownersdhip of a house, a piece of property, an animal or a slave. The term was also the standard title of Roman emperor and the lord in Greek word is Kurios as a Name of Isreal’s God. Therefore when Paul called Jesus Lord, he accepted Him as God.
Who acknowledges the absolute lordship of Jesus Christ?
1. During the earthly ministry, nature recognizes and responded to the Lordship of Jesus. The winds and waves obeyed His command.
2. The animal world recognized and responded to His lordship. “ He was there in the wilderness forty days tampted of Satan and was with the wild beast and the angels ministered unto Him” ( Mark 1:13 ). It is also significant that when Jesus entered Jerusalem gloriously, He rode on a colt that had never been ridden before ( Luke 19:30-31 )
3. The demons recognized the lordship of Jesus.
4. The diciples recognized the lordship of Jesus. Jesus said “ Yes, you call me Mastre and Lord, and you say well for so I am “ ( John 13:13 )
II. The question “ Lord, what will you want me to do?” was the expression of a surrendered heart and the beginning of a great career.
By this question, Paul was giving voice to his inward repentance toward God and the beginning of his faith toward Jesus Christ as savior. This is a decisive moment for him to show that he responded with the surrender of his heart to Jesus
Paul actively identified himself with the greatest person and with the greatest cause on earth. The person was Jesus Christ and the cause was the Kingdom of God . Later, it was proved in the establishment of churches in many different cities and countries between this moment and the moment of Paul’s martyrdom in Rome .
Have you found some great person and whom you can identify? We cannot live our lives in isolation. Life is made up of relationships and relationships are created by choice. Each of us would be wise to choose to identify with persons who can challenge us to become what God would have us to be.
Have you chosen a cause in which to invest your time, energy and financial resourses? Life is made up not only of relationships to persons, but also to institutions.. What place have you given to the church? Somebody said “ A dollar invested in a church will be higher, sink deeper, spread wider, go farther and last longer than a dollar invested in any other institutions on earth.”
If this is true concerning dollars, it is also true concerning to energy, effort and time. Many are making a sad mistake of giving first-rate loyalty to third-rate causes and giving third-rate loyalty to the church, which is a first-rate cause. Because Paul was responding to the will of his savior, the church was foremost among all institutions in his concern and in his effort.
Conclusion:
“ Lord, what will you want me to do?” is everyone’s question and it shouls be your question. It is urgent because you need to know what the Lord would have you do today.
If you do not know Jesus Christ as savior, it is the will of God that you be saved. If you are here as an indifferent follower of Christ, it is the will of God that you dedicate your life and become a devout follower and servant. Let His will become your will today. Let His way be your way today and always. Amen!
